The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
These two canvases have a historic relining and retain a strong tension on their stretcher; the general texture of the paint is fairly uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment and there is some wear to the paint surface of each.
The still life with the marble ledge on the right hand side has some raised parts to the canvas, including to the red flower in the upper right corner with some minor associated paint losses. There are some restored areas of damage including two patches to the right of the glass. The other canvas with three old repaired tears with historic retouchings that have discoloured and hardened.
Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals some other minor flecks of restoration and suggests that there has been some strengthening to the darker areas. The aged varnish impairs any further examination. The wealth of detail and fine modelling of each is still highly appreciable.
