Lot Essay

When this work first reemerged on the market in 2000, Everett Fahy identified it as a work by Giacomo Coppi, whose use of elongated figures in artificial poses is clearly influenced by the Mannerist circles in which he worked. In the early 1570s, he painted two scenes for Francesco I de' Medici's studiolo in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, both of which reflect the influence of Giorgio Vasari. While in Florence, he also painted works for the churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce. In 1576, he moved to Rome, where he produced the signed and dated frescoes of the Legend of Saint Peter's Chains and the Angelic Concert (both 1577, S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome). His late work reflects his reception of the paintings of Rosso Fiorentino and Jacopo Pontormo.
