The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The vividity of the colouring and the painterly approach to modeling of the figures remain well preserved. The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The paint remains structurally stable. In a raking light a fine pattern of craquelure can be seen across the paint surface. There is evidence in microscopic areas of prior stabilisation to the paint surface, such as in the sky to the centre at the top. There are some minor frame abrasions to the edges of the canvas. Examination under UV light reveals a curved repair to the canvas above the donkey to the left. There are some further scattered retouchings to the lower left quarter of the canvas. Other than this the painting remains in an excellent state of preservation.
