The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a strong tension at the present time. The general texture of the paint is fairly uniform as a consequence of the lining treatment, although the textured brushwork of the artist remains appreciable. Close examination reveals some general wear to the paint surface; examination under ultra-violet fluorescence reveals strengthening to the horses and numerous scattered retouchings throughout, particularly to the sky. There are repairs to a minor tear to the upper left corner and damage to the skyline just above the hounds; these are not visible in natural lighting conditions. There are retouchings in two vertical parallel lines to the right of centre which are possibly related to an old central stretcher bar. These are also not visible in natural light and the artist’s painterly technique is still highly appreciable. The beautiful carved and gilded wood frame is in very good condition.
