The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This unlined canvas is held on an old stretcher and remains stable, however re-stretching would be recommended. There are visible paint losses in the paint surface, which reveal where the canvas rested on its previous stretcher, along with paint losses particularly in the lower right and along the bottom edge (visible in the illustration). The artist’s painterly technique remains highly appreciable nevertheless, which is covered in an old yellowing varnish. Ultraviolet examination reveals some abrasion to the old varnish, however the visible paint appears to be an relatively honest representation of the original work.
