The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a panel comprised of a single board with a vertical grain. The panel has been beveled along the edges. There is a slight convex bow. A crack at lower center measures 8 inches and supported on the reverse with a baton that has been inserted into a channel in the thick panel. The paint layer is stable and exhibits a fine craquelure. A fluid underdrawing is visible through the paint layers, following the contours of the female sitter's face and body. Areas of restoration in the flesh tones are visibe in natural light, and have discolored slightly with age. These restorations are also visible in raking light and follow the vertical wood grain. Further restorations to the background, mirror, and to the male sitter are visible in ultraviolet light. The painting presents well and can be hung in its present state. The painting is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
