This painting is stylistically and thematically consistent with a small group of still lifes traditionally attributed to Nicolas de Largillière, dating to the artist's residence in London in the late 1670s. A nearly identical handling of grape leaves with flaming red tips features in works like the Two bunches of grapes, which is signed and dated 1677, in the Fondation Custodia, Paris, while the tiered arrangement of peaches and grapes in a darkened landscape equally features in paintings such as the Composition of flowers and fruit on architectural elemants sold Sotheby's, Monaco, 2 December 1989, lot 339. Largillière, who received his training from Anton Goubau in Antwerp and joined the city's painters guild in 1673/4, was heavily influenced by the Flemish approach to still life exemplified by the works of artists like Jan Davidsz. de Heem and his son Cornelis, to whom this painting was formerly attributed.

Grapes and peaches in a wicker basket with other fruit on a ledge, a landscape beyondATTRIBUTED TO NICOLAS DE LARGILLIÈRE (PARIS 1656-1746)估价: USD 20,000 - 30,000
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a wax lining. The varnish is cloudy and yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. Restoration to address an approximately 1 ½ inch horizontal tear at the upper right corner as well as an approximately 3 inch L-shaped vertical tear in the center of the canvas are visible in raking light. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the discolored varnish layer, though a campaign of more recent restoration, principally to address some of the thinnest areas of paint in the background and to reinforce contours around the bunch of grapes overhanging the ledge at lower left, the figure in bas relief at lower left and the peaches at lower right, does fluoresce. A further thin line of retouching to address what appears to be an approximately 2 inch long old scratch fluoresces in the dark pigments at upper center. The painting retains some of its original impasto in the details of the leaves and branches. While the painting can be displayed in its current state, its appearance would likely be dramatically enhanced following a sensitive conservation treatment.
