The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. There is a rather loose secondary (?) canvas relining. There is some historic surface abrasion, notably in the darker tones (with a minor area of paint loss in the sitter's mantle above his right wrist), however, the paint surface appears stable, and the picture generally presents well overall. There is an old repaired 'L' shaped tear (approx. 2 x 4 in.) to the background, upper right, and some surface scuffing, notably along the ride edge (associated to old frame wear).
Examination under UV light is somewhat impaired by the old varnish layers. However, it does reveal some historic strengthening to the flesh tones and to some of the darker tones throughout the composition.
