The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The detail of the composition, notably the architectural elements, remains fully appreciable. The painting has been executed with small, neat brushwork, with great exactitude.
The panel is made up of two boards, joined horizontally. The join is supported with a canvas strip. The verso has been treated with wax.
The left-hand join is very prominent to the recto and would benefit from stabilisation; the rest of the panel remains stable. There is a horizontal panel crack of approximately 11 in., which runs through the lower left-quadrant, with associated restoration. There is a further horizontal crack of approximately 4 in. at upper right. There is an old varnish that carries some dirt.
Examination under UV light confirms these observations. There is evidence of some retouching in the darker passages at upper left and lower right. There is some further scattered retouching. The varnish appears to have been selectively cleaned in the paler passages. The paint remains stable.
