The panel has been shaved down to approximately 1⁄8 inch thick and is reinforced with a cradle. There is evidence of old woodworm channels on the reverse. The panel is in plane and the paint appears to be stable on the support. Under natural light, the varnish appears clear and glossy. a craquelure is visible in places, such as the sky. Two horizontal cracks are visible, likely corresponding to panel joins. A few areas of discolored retouching are visible in the sky as well as on the top of the mountain at right. An approximately 4 inch horizontal line of craquelure is visible at lower right. Under ultraviolet light, scatter touches of strengthening fluoresce throughout the sky. a 1⁄4 inch area fluoresces on St. Anthony's shoulder. Additional strenghtening may fluoresce along the lower edge, but it is difficult to read through the old varnish. The painting could be displayed as is, but reexamination by a conservator might be considered.
