Lot Essay

While very little is known of the life of Gregorius de Coninck, his works are exceptionally rare, with only around eight known by the artist. Their style suggests an awareness of, or even a possible apprenticeship under, Jan Davidsz. de Heem during his Antwerp period. The present painting bears close semblance to a still life by de Coninck sold at Sotheby's, London, 13 December 2001, lot 18.
