The canvas, which retains its original tacking edges, is reinforced on the reverse with a wax lining. The varnish is generally clear but yellowed and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light, as are isolated areas of light scuffing along the edges due to frame abrasion. Aside from a few small scattered spots of retouching, ultraviolet light generally reveals only feathered lines of strengthening to close the most pronounced drying craquelure and to reinforce contours of some of the fruits, plants and animals, notably to the bullfinch and to the parrot’s beak. An earlier passage of restoration measuring approximately 3 x 1 ½ inches is also evident in the lower sky just above the horizon line. The painting can be displayed in its current state but its appearance would like be enhanced following a sensitive conservation treatment.
