This painting is held under tension by a heavy cradle, and may have been constructed with two oak panels, as attested to by a panel join or crack running horizontally through the centre of the panel. The work has been painted in thin glazes, resulting in surface abrasion over time. The artist’s draughtsmanship and painterly detail remains highly appreciable, with a wealth of narrative detail. In raking light, restoration to the central crack or panel join is visible along with a small isolated restoration to the bottom of the woman’s cloak. The panel is covered in a thick old yellowing varnish. Ultraviolet examination was obscured by an old varnish, however restoration to the panel join/crack is discernible, with small areas of isolated scattered restoration.
