The sitter was the son of Count John V of Nassau Dillenburg and Elisabeth of Hesse-Marburg. He inherited the lordship of Breda and the duchy of Brabant from his uncle Engelbert II of Nassau in 1504 and, the following year, was admitted to the Order of the Golden Fleece. He was Stadholder of Holland and Zeeland between 1515-1521. Henry served as an important military commander in the Netherlands in the first quarter of the sixteenth century and was a prominent figure at the court of Emperor Charles V.

The paper has been laid down onto panel. There is a vertical addition to the right edge, approx 2.5 cm. in width. There is some scuffing along the lower edge and evidence of gold paint on the surface at the central right edge. The paint surface appears to be a little worn in the hair where the ground is emerging. Examination under ultra violet light reveals retouching associated to a historic damage in the head and neck with more minor retouching in the flesh tones, an area of restoration to the parapet (lower right), and some very minor strengthening to the costume.
