James Ward originally trained as an engraver but turned to oil painting in the 1790s, influenced by the sporting works of his brother-in-law George Morland. Ward followed in the traditional of George Stubbs, developing the genre of Romantic animal painting in which the creatures are given dignity and personality. The terrier is set against a mountainous landscape with swirling clouds, echoing the panoramic landscapes of Rubens which Ward had copied in his years as a mezzotinter.

The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. The paint surface has been somewhat flattened by the relining treatment, however, the artist’s technique and textured brushwork remains appreciable and the highest impasto is well preserved. Examination under ultra violet light reveals a repaired diagonal tear with associated retouching in the background, immediately to the right of the dog’s front legs (lower centre), and a repaired damage to the background to the left of the hind legs (lower centre). There is some scattered infilling associated to the craquelure, chiefly in the sky, and some more minor spots of strengthening. The giltwood frame is in good condition.
