Samson and Delilah

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas is unlined and is coming away from its stretcher on the upper and right edges. The paint surface is somewhat dirty beneath an old varnish with abrasion from the frame at the lower and lateral edges. The darks of the background have sunk somewhat and abrasion has caused some loss of detail to the figures at right.
Inspection under UV is impeded by the milky varnish but reveals some very minor, carefully applied retouching to the background surrounding Delilah's head, to Samson's chest and a little scattered in the rightmost figures. There appears to be a further, older campaign of restoration beneath the opaque varnish though it is difficult to assess clearly.
