The canvas is supported with a wax lining and the paint is stable on the support. Under natural light, the varnish is clear and a fine craquelure is visible in places. Discolored retouches are visible over the blue robe of the bearded man at right, as well as over some places on the blue robe of the woman at center. Repaired tears are slightly visible along the upper edge. A crack or canvas seam is visible along the left edge, and a 1 inch vertical scuff is visible on the stone at lower center. Scattered discolored strengthening is also visible to the sky. Under ultraviolet light, scattered strengthening fluoresces on the architecture at left and along the ceiling, as well as near the capital of the second column from the right and around the first column from the right. A larger passage fluoresces over the shoulder of the standing man art far left. Retouches are also seen to the second man’s wreath, Trajan’s proper left shoulder and passages along the lower edge. A few other passages fluoresce over the figures. The current restoration was sensitively applied, and the painting may be displayed as is.
