SMITH, Adam (1723-1790). An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1789.

The first American edition of “the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought”(PMM). Originally published in London in 1776, this first American edition was printed in the newly independent United States in the year of George Washington’s inauguration—just in time to provide a vital influence on the economic policies of the fledgling republic. Three volumes, 12mo (168 x 99mm). Contemporary sheep (boards detached in vols 2 and 3, other joints loose but holding, boards dry and worn).
