Specialist Notes:

David Lachapelle is known internationally for his exceptional talent in combining a unique hyper-realistic aesthetic with profound social messages. Inspired by Botticelli’s Venus and Mars, this work is also a response to the gold trade in Africa and a critique of consumerism in the West. Executed right after the financial crash in 2008, the image is overflowing with details, every inch shot by the artist, and very little edited in post-production. These elements can overwhelm the viewer but on closer inspection demand our attention and call on our conscience.
