Artcurial – Briest Le Fur Poulain, F. Tajan: Tuesday, October 23, 2007, Lot 1023.

Specialist Notes:

John Coplan’s black and white studies of the ageing body are a reaction against the cult of youth and beauty as represented by commercial photography in the 1980s. When he posed for these portraits, he was also reflecting on the passage of time and the works can be read as such. Honest in their portrayal, he often adopted positions which distort our reading of the body. For example, in this present Lot Coplans is crouching and concealing his head, producing a new perspective and reflection on human form.
