One of two prints of this image made specifically for the Lange Retrospective held at The Museum of Modern Art, New York from January 25 to March 27, 1966.

"I assigned myself the task of photographing the May Day demonstrations at Civic Center. I knew there was a great deal of trouble abroad, and that there were going to be demonstrations at the Civic Center by the unemployed, and I said to myself, 'I can't afford to do this and I shouldn't, but I want to.'" (Lange, The Photographs of Dorothea Lange, Hallmark Cards, Inc., 1995, p. 22).
