Lot Essay

Graciela Iturbide is known for her documentary work of native peoples of Mexico and their cultures. In this image she captures a mysterious image of a woman with long billowing hair traversing a rocky terrain, holding a boombox in her right hand. This woman, who's face is hidden from us, is from the Seri peoples who originally inhabited the Isla del Tiburón (Shark Island). Today they strive to maintain their traditions but also embrace modernity, hinted to by the inclusion of the radio. Speaking of her practice the artist remarked “I don’t pretend to make my photographs speak the truth of what Mexico is all about. But in its villages I can feel the way culture is changing, and it’s fascinating to live through it and try to capture it on camera.”
