Lot Essay

The present work is one of Picasso’s cleanest and most beautifully articulated ceramics. Carved and molded from a sheet of clay, rather than sculpted from a block, this work has a wonderful drawn two-dimensional quality that emphasizes Picasso’s mastery of line and refinement of form. Its sinuous body and foreshortened limbs gives heed to the figure in motion, while its pristine white tone grants a balance and harmony to the piece. Conceived in 1965 in a small and coveted edition of 50, Grosse tête, profil droit is one of the most unusual and sculptural pieces Picasso created while at Madoura.
