Lot Essay

A rebellious animal, rendered in clay by a rebellious artist Vase aux chèvres displays a diorama wrapping around the outside of its rounded form. Like a three-dimensional short story on a vase, it resembles a Grecian urn, which might tell the story of a chariot race, an allegory, or a domestic scene as one turns it around. Here, you’ve got the goat running, then eating leaves, living in its natural environment. Picasso portrays the goat here in a very free way, suggesting an intentionally simplified rendering of a carefree animal in the wild.
