Lot Essay

David Hammons humor and irreverence (or reverence) is apparent in this quasi ready-made sculpture. The artist has rebound Arturo Schwarz’s The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp and re-titled it The Holy Bible: The Old Testament. Another example of this book resides in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, and hasbeen exhibited there multiple times, notably at an altar where visitors are encouraged to kneel.
