Lot Essay
Marilyn Levine is known for her hyper-realist, high fire ceramic sculptures of leather boots, bags, suitcases and jackets. In 1974, Levine was exhibited at Ivan Karp’s famous OK Harris Gallery, which was then located across the street from the Holly Solomon Gallery on West Broadway street. Holly Solomon had a longstanding friendship with Karp and acquired these boots directly from him at OK Harris, and later displayed them proudly on her coffee table at home.

The work is structurally sound and all of the components are present. The tongue of the right shoe is loose within the boot, presumably in keeping with the artist's working method. There is a hairline crack visible above the heel of the left shoe. There is a hairline crack visible along the outer and inner edges of the right shoe, as well as a small loss at the upper edge of the heel. There are very minor abrasions visible intermittently to both shoes.
