Specialist Notes:

Since 1980, Candida Höfer’s Räume (Spaces) series has explored public spaces—libraries, hotels, museums, concert halls, palaces, and other buildings—at moments of human absence. Part of the Düsseldorf School, so titled for those photographers such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth and Thomas Ruff who studied under the German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, Höfer, like her peers, has carved out a distinct aesthetic and viewpoint. Of her practice the artist has said, ‘I am interested in the presentation of culturally-made objects in spaces—and the spaces themselves as such objects, the presentation of presentation, if you like…there is not only the interplay between the presenting and the presented, but there is also an interplay between the type and the individual space. And finally, this individuality is formed by the cultural environment and the historical period of the space. Making images of spaces is, for me, an exploration of these interplays. In some places, certain historical periods prevail over others, and this shows in the spaces’ (C. Höfer, quoted in C. Yerkes, ‘Interview with Candida Höfer, in Museo, 2010).
