拍品专文

Born in 1970 Yin Zhaoyang studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in the years following the 1989 Tiananmen Square incidence.  He often incorporates political images in his work and has developed a unique style known as ‘collage of ideals’ which is apparent in his iconic paintings of Mao, Tiananmen Square, and the Chinese flag. In this work, many figures of people form several radiating queues in the center of the Tiananmen Square. Faceless, aimless, and disconnected from one another, each individual is immersed in the yellow-orange light emanating from the Tiananmen Gate. Through this delicate arrangement, the political power stands out against the overall ambiguous atmosphere. Underneath the calm surface, one can feel a despair and madness similar to the feeling evoked by Edvard Munch’s The Scream. By creating such a magnificent scene, Yin Zhaoyang places the crowd and the architecture into a historical context and invites views to ponder on a larger scope the relationship between individual, history, politics, and society.
