Lot Essay

Richard Diebenkorn beautifully plays off of the duality of reality and abstraction in his ink and charcoal studies for his famed Ocean Park painting series. As the artist asserted in 1957, "a forceful quality in art, truly representative of our modern times, will rise above the labels of abstraction and realism."
