Lot Essay

Sandro Chia is known as the leading member of the Italian Transvanguardia movement that was at its peak during the 1980s. Part of the wider movement of international Neo-Expressionist painters, it was seen as a reaction to the minimalism and conceptual art that had dominated the 1970s. The present work exhibits all of the features of this expressive visual language: intense subjectivity, the portrayal of the human body in an abstract yet recognizable manner, vivid colour, as well as rough and emotional handling of materials.
