Specialist Notes:Through sculptures made of paper, celebrated Greek artist Pavlos represents objects of the everyday. The artist carefully folds and rolls machine cut strips and misprinted commercial posters, interweaving different colours and patterns together until the object represented comes into complete focus. Through the movement created by Pavlos’ elaborate and detailed folds, what starts as a flat surface is transformed into a three-dimensional illusion that questions the different layers of perception and interpretation in art.
From a distance, the work seems a flat, printed image of a red winter jacket hanging casually on the wall. It is only when the viewer gets closer that the true nature of the work presents itself: a three-dimensional work created from elaborate texture. Pavlos’ careful and exact composition transmits the illusion of light and shadow and even recalls the downiness of a feather or fur jacket.
