JACKSON, Andrew (1767-1845). Manuscript document signed ("Andrew Jackson Major Genl"), "Camp Jackson," 17 March 1813.

One page, 200 x 150mm.

Jackson on the march that would bestow him with his nickname, "Old Hickory." Jackson had quickly assembled a force of 2,000 Tennessee volunteer to march to the defense of New Orleans at the start of 1813 against an anticipated attack by the British. When Jackson reached Natchez he received orders from the War Department to disband his force and transfer any supplies to General Wilkinson. Rather than submit to a general he considered a scoundrel, he refused the order, and led his forces on a difficult march back to Nashville, earning him the nickname "Hickory" (and in later years, "Old Hickory") for his fortitude. Here, Jackson approves a payment for provisions used by his cavalry.
