Lot Essay

Im Tanz is one of Heckel's first woodcuts to explore the subject of the female nude, which was to become a crucial theme for the artists of Die Brücke, and arguably one of the most dynamic and attractive of his very early woodcuts of the period of 1903-05. It is with this woodcut that Heckel finds a truly 'expressionist' style and language as a printmaker.
