The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas has a glue lining and is slightly slack on its keyed stretcher, with buckling most notable along the upper edge. The surface is dirty and has an uneven varnish. In natural light, scattered unrestored losses are visible, especially at the base of the column to the right of the sitter's head, above his proper right wrist, at the extreme upper left edge and by the leg of the stool. Two contact marks are visible in the sky at center right. There are two cleaning windows: one at lower right, with a diameter of 3 inches, and another behind the sitter's proper right shoulder, measuring 1 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening in the red foreground, especially at lower right, and a small area of restoration in the sitter's proper right cheek. Further inspection is hindered by the opaque and uneven varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state.
