Lot Essay

This idealized portrait represents King Charles II of Spain around the age of 12, shortly before his legal majority and expected ascension to the crown in full. The hair and facial features of the present picture closely follow those of Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo's various representations of the young king, such as one now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P008201), while the clothing of the sitter may be taken from Juan de Miranda Carreño's portrait of Charles, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. GG_1714). Charles had been king since the age of three, but his mother, Mariana of Austria (1634-1696), acted as regent until 1675. In the present portrait, Charles wears the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece, of which the young king was Grand Master. His death without issue in 1700 would precipitate the transfer of the Order from the House of Habsburg to the House of Bourbon, as well as bringing about the War of the Spanish Succession.
