Lot Essay

The present drawing appears to be a study relating to a portrait of the Marjoribanks family (illustrated P. Conner, George Chinnery, Woodbridge, 1993, p. 225, pl. 93). Charles Marjoribanks had joined the East India Company's Canton office in 1813, and in 1830 became President of the Select Committee, before returning home to England in 1832.
