The arms are those of Turner with Marwood in pretence, for Cholmley Turner M.P. (1685-1757) of Kirkleatham, Yorkshire and his wife Jane Marwood (1688-1764), daughter of George Marwood (1665-1700) of Busby Hall Yorkshire, whom he married in 1709.
CHOLMLEY TURNER M.P. Turner inherited large estates near Northallerton and on Teesside from his father and great uncle together with considerable lead mining interests. His wealth enabled him to enter politics first standing as the member for Northallerton for the Whig party in 1715 and then for Yorkshire in 1726, being re-elected in 1734. He often voted against his party much to the annoyance of Sir Robert Walpole.
He established the Kirkleatham Free School, following the wishes of his great uncle. He also commissioned the architect James Gibbs to construct a mausoleum for his son Marwood William Turner. The Grade I listed structure is an accomplished work in the English Baroque style with an octagonal plan and spire, dedicated to his son is also contains Chomley's own tomb.
