The coat-of-arms on the present lot are those of Great Britain with Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in pretence in a lozenge-shaped cartouche for one of the daughters of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Though there is no definitive indication which of their five daughters this cup was presented to, it was most likely their youngest, Princess Beatrice, born 14 April 1857. The christening for Princess Beatrice took place on 16 June 1857 and was attended by her godparents, the Duchess of Kent, her grandmother, Victoria, the Princess Royal, her eldest sister, and Victoria's fiancé Prince Friedrich William of Prussia. it is most likely that one of these godparents gifted this cup to the princess on the occasion.
