Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor best known for his colorful, whimsical abstract public sculptures, mobiles and kinetic sculptures, creating three-dimensional “drawings in space.” While primarily known for his sculpture, Calder diversely practiced painting, printmaking, children’s book illustrations, tapestries and rugs, miniatures and theatre set design.
