Festival book documenting the celebration of the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle held at Versailles by Louis XIV in 1668. The celebration "sought to demonstrate balance in the king's administration by returning to the gardens at Versailles and providing entertainment and beautiy for his subjects...water was a special feature for this festival; fountains filled with scuptures of dragons and dolphins spewed bubbling jets" (The Edible Monument). This publication also documents the performance of Lully’s musical comedy Les Festes de l’amour et de Bacchus. Watanabe 1924; The Edible Monument pp. 42-43.

Folio (397 x 275mm). 5 double-page plates by Jean le Pautre, engraved headpiece. 19th-century maroon quarter morocco with blindstamped sigil of William Stirling-Maxwell. Provenance: William Stirling-Maxwell (1818 -1878; binding and large bookplate) – Pierpont Morgan Library (deaccession stamp).
