Lot Essay

Zuzek's take on the classic harlequin print is fundamentally Floridian -- filled with local sea-life and fishing motifs -- but also the unexpected: a card suit here, a portrait miniature there. In typical Zuzek fashion, every inch of space is filled, with vines and hibiscus flowers. The smiling sun is an oft-returned to motif in Zuzek's work, appearing in both in her textile designs and the promotional materials she created for Key West Hand Print Fabrics, the screen-printing studio and retail store where her designs came to life. Harlillyquin would become a best-seller for Lilly Pulitzer, used in both men's and women's clothing in numerous colorways.
