The American Falls and Terrapin Point at Niagara Falls
oil on canvas
unframed
18 x 1334in. (45.7 x 34.9cm.)
The view postdates the blowing up of Terrapin Tower, the observation tower which stood on the point, in 1873. The wooden footbridge shown here was first erected in 1833 and survived into the 20th century. It was a 300 foot long plank walkway built of heavy timbers which extended from the mainland of Goat Island to the crest line of the Horseshoe Falls.
