signed 'Tom Prinsep' (on the mount), inscribed 'Barrackpore - and Park - Sermapore opposite - Chinnery's style but spoilt paper and first attempt..' on the reverse (according to the Eyre & Hobhouse label attached to the backing board)

Fifteen miles upriver from Kolkata, Barrackpore was the site of the East India Company's barracks from 1772. An extravagant Government House and estate was built there as a suburban residence for the viceroy once control of India passed from the East India Company to the British Crown in the 19th century.
