The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting presents well overall. The canvas is lined and the varnish is slightly yellow. In natural light a campaign of thin vertical strokes of restoration addresing areas of damage in the background, to the lower edge, to tree branch at left, and to the sitter's neck and upper back is visible. Two small restored tears are visible in the sitter's upper back, each measuring approximately 3 1/2 inches. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these restorations and reveals some additional scattered retouching in the flesh tones and strengthening to thinly painted areas of the background. Ultraviolet light also reveals a restored tear at lower right, in the dark area of the background, measuring 4 1/4 inches vertically. The painting can be hung in its present state.
