Lot Essay

The model for the present lot was created by Léopold Bernhard Bernstamm (1859-1939), a sculptor born in Riga who was studied in St. Petersburg and Florence before completing his training with French sculptor Antonin Mercié in Paris. Though he established his career with portrait busts, creating a series of celebrated Russians in the 1880’s and continuing to depict important French figures once he settled in Paris, Bernstamm also created a number of sculptures of full length female nudes such as the work offered here. An example of this model by Bernstamm in white marble was sold at Sotheby’s, London, 14 December 2016, lot 31. Another example in Sèvres biscuit porcelain was sold at Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas, 7 December 2021, lot 61149.
