The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents well overall. The canvas has a glue lining and the varnish is clear. There is an uneven craquelure across the surface. Christ remains largely untouched, except for a few pinpoint restorations along the craquelure. The dark blue pigments in the Virgin's clothing and the dark pigments in the landscape are thin and in natural light a campaign of strengthening to these areas is visible. An area of sensitively applied restoration measuring 10 x 3 inches affects the Virgin's hair, neck, chin, and chest corresponding to a patch on the reverse. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and reveals some strengthening in the hair and garments of the angel, in the still life at lower center, and scattered in the sky. The painting is ready to hang.
