Based on the style of this gown it is possible that it belonged to Iris Apfel's mother, who owned a boutique and was described by her daughter as having "a great reputation as a fashion plate." "My style turned out quite different from hers," Iris writes in Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel, "but it was she who laid my groundwork." (14)

George Halley founded his eponymous fashion label in 1966, specializing in eveningwear recognized for its romantic sensibility and expert unification of bold colors and textures with feminine silhouettes. In 1968 he received the esteemed Coty American Fashion Critics Award.
