Lot Essay

The Rotonde de Cartier minute repeater flying tourbillon is the first minute repeater from the House of Cartier. Launched in 2011, the watch is powered by Cal. 9402 MC, developed completely in-house by the maison’s best watchmakers. The movement uses 447 pieces and bears the prestigious Geneva Hallmark certification.

It is believed that Cartier only made 20 watches a year of this reference and each timepiece (in titanium) was sold at a retail price of €220,000 at launch. The large and light case serves as a resonance chamber for the hammers and gongs, which are linked to the movement plate and the middle of the case, resulting in powerful chimes that register up to 68 decibels.

The minute repeater is activated by the pusher at 8 0’ clock and the hammer and gongs are clearly visible on the dial along with the flying tourbillon with its characteristic C-shaped bridge. With a total production of just 50 pieces, the watch combines a minute repeater with a flying tourbillon and represents the absolute best of Cartier’s watchmaking division.
