Lot Essay

IWC has used the Da Vinci family as the test bed for most of their technical innovations starting with the hexagonal Beta-21Quartz-powered Reference 3501 in 1969. The Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Ref. 3750 from 1985, invented by Kurt Klaus, was the first mechanical perpetual calendar that eschewed the use corrector buttons to adjust the calendar indications. A year later, IWC presented the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 3755), the first perpetual calendar wristwatch in a case made of a scratch-resistant black zirconium oxide.

The Da Vinci line also debuted the brand’s first in-house chronograph movement, the Cal. 89360 in 2007. This chronograph movement notably displays the elapsed minutes and hours like the time of day on a single subdial and is used to power the present reference, which features a very technical ceramic and titanium case.

While the middle case is made from black ceramic, the bezel, caseback, chronograph pushers and crown in polished grade 5 titanium provide a strong colour contrast. The special three-dimensional design of the dial with a réhaut volant (the floating minutes minute display) – adds to the attractiveness of this Da Vinci model.
