Lot Essay

One of the most appreciated vintage watches by Patek Philippe, reference 570 was introduced in 1938 as a larger version of the reference 96 and remained in production until 1972. With a 35 mm. diameter, it was quite a large watch for the time, but it is a size that has aged incredibly well and is perfectly proportioned for the modern wrist.

Combining this with the minimalist aesthetics and the standard 20 mm. lug width, the reference 570 can be adapted to almost any occasion. All Ref. 570 cases were made by prolific mid-century case maker Antoine Gerlach and the key number (4) is engraved on the inside caseback.

The production of Ref. 570 was divided over three series; the present example is from the second series of production and features the Cal. 12-400 movement, the first series was powered by Cal. 12-120 movements. Patek Philippe scholars believe that only about 29 examples in pink gold with Cal. 12-400 movement have been identified, making this quite a rare and collectible vintage Calatrava model.
